The Relationship Between Farmer Capacity and Income Level of Chili Farming in Ciamis Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia

Abstrak

Chili is one of the horticultural commodities that has high economic value.  The cultivation of chili often encountered obstacles due to the limited capacity of farmers in the cultivation process.  The low capacity of farmers causes chili productivity to be not optimal, causing a shortage of chili supply and a drastic increase in chili prices.  This study was conducted to identify the level of farm income, the level of capacity of farmers in chili farming and the relationship between the capacity of farmers in chili farming and the level of farm income.  The research was conducted in Cibereum Village, Sukamantri District, Ciamis Regency from January to March 2024.  The number of respondents was 40 chili farmers who were determined using a simple random sampling approach.  Data were obtained through interviews using a questionnaire.  Farmers' capacity level was obtained through a Likert scale approach grouped into four categories (very low, low, medium and high). Farmers' income was 
analyzed using the farming approach and the relationship between farmers' capacity and the level of farm income was analyzed using the spearman rank correlation test.  The average income of chili farm was IDR15,527,000/ha/growing season.  The level of capacity of farmers in chili cultivation is categorized into six subs including capacity in seeding, tillage, planting, maintenance, fertilization and harvesting.  The level of capacity of farmers in chili cultivation was in the high category with a score of 2.67.  The harvesting process was the one having the highest farming capacity with a score of 2.73.  There was a significant relationship between the level of capacity of farmers in chili cultivation and farm income, the higher the capacity of farmers the higher the farm income of chili farmers
